A Resting Place

In God we trust. When our country lived by that motto, people throughout the world trusted America. It is unfortunate that the erosion of trust has undermined peace and security for America and the world. The promises of politicians have rarely been valued, but today we have become inured to the blatant lies from their ilk. Sadder still is the devastating effect the words of our leaders have around the world and here in America. In the eyes of many, the lights have gone out in what was once considered a shining city on a hill. Can trust be found anywhere or in anyone when it is no longer found in a nation-state? "As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him." 2 Samuel 22:31. In these past few days it has become obvious that reliance on a strong military is not sufficient to garner trust. Little has changed since the days when David was king of Israel and he wrote, "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; ...

Unsatisfied Eyes

"Now godliness with contentment is great gain." Paul had been counseling Timothy to avoid the arguments and disputes of those obsessed with obtaining godliness through debating skills and attainment of Scriptural knowledge. Paul had previously pointed out that adherence to words of Christ and following His example were the only ways to achieve real godliness (1 Timothy 6:3-6). Philippians 4:11. This was not something only for himself. He directed that our "conduct be without covetousness" and to be satisfied with what we have. Paul also was quick to remind others of God's promise to never leave or for...

That Tiny Grasp for Eternity

Her tiny fingers wrapped around my finger in a tight grasp as I touched her hand after reaching into the opening. The incubator was against the wall framed by a brace of lamps with the shades turned to soften the lighting. In the stillness I whispered, "Kimberly. . .Kimberly Ann. We love you." She was so minute at a pound and twelve ounces, but oh so beautiful. Five days after her birth, Kimberly passed into God's watchful care until resurrection morning. The pain returns upon reflection, remembering that Carolyn was never able to hold her and only saw her during the brief moments following birth. Complications from premature birth kept her at one hospital while Kimberly was transferred to another providing specialized care for infants. Despite our loss, it is reassuring to know that a heavenly family reunion waits for those remaining faithful to God. When the Sadducees tried to entrap Christ with questions about marriage and the resurrection He responded, "You ...
