From Attitude to Hope

At the threat of disciplinary action the young man responded, "I don't care!" A person's attitude during times of difficulty is often indicative of their expectations concerning the future. Knowing this, one may conclude that attitude is a significant factor in character development. Introspection regarding what others think of as character is not a common practice despite public perception of our character or reputation. Such character is viewed as one's disposition or frame of mind, their habitual inclinations and tendencies. These thoughts beg the question of whether the character of a person can be changed? As I watch fellow inmates walk by the Mallards along the breezeway, a familiar saying comes to mind: "If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's probably a duck." My thoughts are not on the ducks but focused on the inmates and the outside world's perception of them. Unfortunately, just as ducks are ducks...
