Slipping into the Abyss

A friend of over forty years is now stepping on the edge of eternity, yet he is unable to see beyond the abyss at his feet. Why is it that others are able to look beyond the emptiness---seeing promise fulfilled? Unbelief prevents my friend from living the fulfilled life that God intends for each of us. The Psalmist tells us "the fool has said in his heart, there is no God" (Psalm 14:1; 53:1). This pointed statement likely comes from David's perception of the existing evidence of God's existence suggested by the following words: When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man, that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that you visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.
